About Photographer Carla Van Wagoner and Captured Images Photography

Hi there, I’m Carla Van Wagoner and I’ve been a photographer for over 35 years or so. I first picked up a 35 MM film camera (a Minolta with auto focus, a new feature back then) in 1986 and haven’t stopped chasing the light ever since. I started Captured Images Photography in 1987/1988 in Alameda, CA while both raising my two sons and working McDonald’s. I took classes for photography in junior college both in Alameda and San Marcos, CA. Even though I started a little late (my mid 20s,) I always wanted to be a photographer, particularly in the editorial/publishing world. I loved collecting magazines and newspapers when I was a younger.

I’ve worked in Southern CA for most of my photography career. I went to work in the photography field, despite never earning a degree. There is something to be said about either, “Just go for it,” or “Fake it until you make it.” I jumped in and did both. All while working other jobs to help support myself or my family.

My photo adventures have included:

Working or being published at that local junior college newspaper in San Marcos, CA.

Working a major San Diego community newspaper group both as a chief photographer, photo editor and other duties such as a page designer, assistant to the editor for almost 10 years (this was actually a paid job and it has been sold, resold and rebranded since my time there). While at the newspaper, I earned several awards in newspaper competitions.

Working behind the scenes at a major photography agency for almost 10 years (also a paid job). Some of my editorial work is currently seen world wide via Shutterstock, Dreamstime, Alamy (located in England) and Geisler Fotopress (located in Germany), as well as countless other photo agencies and local publications. Let’s face it – I still like being published and will always strive to be in print or digital.

Working with local families and businesses for various photography needs when the opportunities arise.

I’ve even worked with local film directors on BTS (behind the scenes) images for small films which were submitted to film competitions. I love working on film sets.

In addition to my love of the publishing world, I also like doing family portraits, headshots, small weddings, pets, and working with local businesses to increase their visual awareness to their prospective clients. And, I love to travel and take scenic images when given the opportunity.

Basically, my images have been used for editorial, private family and business purposes.

Even though I’ve worked other jobs and did photography too – I am now recently “retired” from working for other businesses. Photography is no longer the side hustle, or second job, or even a job for someone else – it’s now my full-time main focus — FOR ME.

If you want to know more about me, please reach out if you have any questions. I’m always willing to answer questions about me or my photography. I can be reached via email (my preferred methods of communication) at: cvwshutter@gmail.com
